Conditions We Treat

What is Pain?

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience tied to actual or potential tissue damage. It is the body's warning system, telling the brain through the nervous system that something needs attention or protecting.

The Biological Mechanism

Nociception

Nerve endings called nociceptors pick up harmful stimuli — heat, pressure, certain chemicals — at the site of injury, and flag to the brain that something needs attention.

Signal Transmission

Those endings turn the stimulus into electrical signals, which travel quickly up the spinal cord.

Brain Processing

The thalamus and cerebral cortex receive and interpret them, turning signal into the physical sensation and the feeling of pain.

Major Types of Pain

Acute Pain

Short-term pain arriving suddenly from a specific injury, illness, or operation — a paper cut, a sprained ankle. It goes once the tissue underneath has healed.

Chronic Pain

Pain persisting beyond three to six months, either continuing long after the original injury healed or arising from something ongoing such as arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Nociceptive Pain

Pain from damage to body tissue, usually described as sharp, aching, or throbbing — a fracture, a muscle strain.

Neuropathic Pain

Pain arising from damage or malfunction in the nervous system itself, often described as burning, shooting, stabbing, or tingling. Sciatica and diabetic neuropathy are examples.

Factors That Influence Pain

Psychological State

Anxiety, stress, depression, and fear all lower your pain threshold, and can make the same sensation feel considerably worse.

Sleep and Fatigue

When you are exhausted, your body manages and suppresses pain signals less well.

Previous Experiences

Previous injuries, and your memory of them, strongly shape how your brain reads and responds to something painful now.

What are the issues with Pain?

Acute pain does a necessary job. Pain that goes unresolved, or becomes chronic, brings serious problems for your physical health, your mental health, and your daily life.

Physical Health and Systemic Decline

Sleep Disruption

Persistent pain keeps the body out of deep, restorative sleep. That brings chronic fatigue, a weaker immune system, and less capacity to cope with pain the next day.

Mobility Loss and Muscle Atrophy

People restrict how they move to avoid pain. Less activity means weaker muscle, stiffer joints, worse balance, and a higher risk of falling.

Cardiovascular Stress

Ongoing pain keeps the sympathetic nervous system on alert. That sustained stress state raises heart rate and blood pressure, and puts extra load on the cardiovascular system.

Mental Health and Cognitive Impairment

Anxiety and Depression

Living with pain that is not being managed alters brain chemistry and drains emotional reserves. Severe anxiety, clinical depression, and hopelessness often follow.

Brain Fog and Focus Loss

Pain signals take up a great deal of processing capacity, which leaves less available for memory, concentration, decisions, and working through ordinary problems.

Emotional Irritability

Constant discomfort erodes patience. Irritability, mood swings, and general frustration are common.

Social and Lifestyle Disruptions

Social Isolation

Pain makes people cancel plans, drop hobbies, and avoid company. That isolation weakens relationships and deepens loneliness.

Financial and Career Strain

Chronic pain is among the leading causes of missed work and long-term disability. Lost income alongside rising medical costs creates real financial strain.

Loss of Independence

As physical capability narrows, ordinary tasks — cooking, cleaning, driving — become difficult, and people end up dependent on others.

How Ivy en Rose Treats Pain

Ivy en Rose Medical Spa runs a non-surgical pain management programme led by Dr. Andrew Vargas, MD. It brings together interventional procedures, physical rehabilitation, and physiological wellness, to reduce chronic discomfort and get you moving again.

Bespoke Medical Assessments

Dr. Vargas Personalized Consultation

It starts with an in-depth, unhurried Bespoke Pain Management Assessment. Rather than treating the painful spot in isolation, we map the sleep, diet, stressors, and metabolic health shaping how sensitive your body is to pain.

Interventional & Regenerative Procedures

Targeted PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Injections

Autologous PRP joint injections for localised joint, tendon, and ligament pain. Concentrated growth factors from your own blood support natural healing, commonly in the back, neck, shoulders, elbows, knees, wrists, and ankles.

Minimally Invasive Diagnostics

Targeted diagnostic procedures let us locate the neurological or structural origin of the pain precisely.

Supportive Therapies & Wellness Optimization

Movement-Based & Physical Rehabilitation

We coordinate rehabilitation and movement-focused therapy — tailored physical therapy, yoga, Pilates — to improve stability and break the fear-avoidance loop that leaves joints stiff.

Non-Opioid Medications & Supplements

We use evidence-based pharmacology, working through carefully chosen non-opioid routes alongside clinical supplements such as magnesium glycinate, to help calm nerve hyperexcitability.

Targeted IV Drip & Recovery Therapy

Medical IV infusions and hydration drips clear systemic oxidative stress, deliver cellular vitamins, and support physical recovery.

Personalized pain management protocol

Book a consultation and Dr. Vargas will build a plan combining in-clinic procedures, regenerative therapy, and physiological wellness.
