Conditions We Treat
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, and its main features are persistent redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels across the face. It usually affects the centre — the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin. It is lifelong, and it tends to move in cycles of flare-up and remission.
It can look like a blush, a mild sunburn, or adult acne, but it is a distinct vascular and inflammatory problem.
The Four Primary Subtypes
Dermatologists divide rosacea into four clinical types, and it is possible to have more than one at once:
Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (Vascular)
Persistent flushing and redness, with tiny broken vessels sitting close to the surface. The skin often burns, stings, or feels very sensitive.
Papulopustular Rosacea (Inflammatory)
Breakouts that resemble acne, alongside swelling and small red bumps that can fill with pus. Unlike ordinary acne, there are usually no blackheads and no deep cystic nodules.
Phymatous Rosacea
The skin thickens and swells, taking on a bumpy, irregular texture. It affects the nose most often, which can become enlarged or bulbous — a condition called rhinophyma.
Ocular Rosacea
Affects the eyes and lids, leaving them bloodshot, watery, and irritated. It brings a gritty feeling, as though there is sand in the eye, along with burning, dryness, and recurrent styes or lid bumps.
Common Triggers
The underlying biological cause is still unknown, but flare-ups are driven heavily by things that increase blood flow to the surface of the skin:
Temperature extremes
Hot baths, strong wind, or cold air all dilate the facial vessels and set off flushing.
Sunlight exposure and UV rays
UV is a near-universal trigger. It weakens the skin barrier and promotes inflammation.
Spicy foods and hot beverages
Heat and capsaicin activate nerve receptors that send more blood to the face.
Alcohol consumption
Red wine especially, which carries histamine and other compounds that widen blood vessels.
Emotional stress or intense exercise
Both raise core temperature and circulation, which commonly sets off a flare.
Management and Treatments
There is no permanent cure, but medical guidance combined with the right skincare keeps it controlled and stops it worsening:
Topical Medications
Prescriptions such as metronidazole, azelaic acid, or brimonidine calm inflammation and constrict the superficial vessels, which reduces redness.
Gentle Skincare
Non-soap, fragrance-free cleansers, plus a daily mineral sunscreen such as zinc oxide, protect a barrier that is already compromised.
Clinical Laser Therapies
Advanced laser skin rejuvenation or vascular lasers can target broken vessels and collapse them, which clears a good deal of the chronic redness and flushing.
What are the issues with Rosacea?
Rosacea brings physical, functional, and psychological difficulties well beyond how it looks. Because it is chronic and unpredictable, managing it takes daily attention.
Physical Comfort and Skin Integrity
Painful Sensations
During a flare the skin often feels hot, tender, tight, or intensely itchy. Plain water or ordinary skincare can produce sharp burning or stinging.
Hyper-Reactive Skin Barrier
The barrier becomes compromised and hyper-sensitive, which makes finding tolerable skincare genuinely difficult. Standard anti-ageing or acne products can trigger severe irritation and swelling.
Permanent Tissue Changes
Untreated over many years, chronic inflammation can cause tissue overgrowth and thickening — phymatous change. Most often that means a bulbous, permanently enlarged nose, known as rhinophyma.
Medical and Functional Risks
Ocular Damage
Where ocular rosacea goes unmanaged, chronic inflammation damages the eye surface. That brings persistent dryness, light sensitivity, recurrent styes, and in serious cases corneal scarring that threatens vision.
Permanent Vascular Damage
Repeated flushing gradually weakens the microscopic walls of the blood vessels. In time they lose the ability to constrict, leaving permanently visible spider veins (telangiectasia) and structural facial redness.
Social and Psychological Impact
Emotional Distress
Because it sits in the middle of the face, rosacea carries a heavy psychosocial weight. A National Rosacea Society survey found more than 80% of people with it experience real embarrassment and frustration, with many reporting higher rates of anxiety, social phobia, and depression.
Misjudgment and Stigma
The redness across the nose and cheeks has long been wrongly associated with heavy drinking or poor hygiene. That stigma is unfair, and it leaves many people self-conscious and withdrawn.
How Ivy en Rose Treats Rosacea
We treat rosacea and facial redness with a combination of light therapy, tissue-remodelling treatment, and barrier-repair skincare, aimed at reducing how reactive the vessels are.
Light & Advanced Energy Modalities
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photofacials
This is our main treatment for vascular concerns. The light wavelengths are absorbed by the broken superficial vessels and the redness itself, collapsing them safely without harming the skin around them.
Morpheus8 RF Microneedling
Better known for anti-ageing work, we also use Morpheus8's radiofrequency energy in rosacea, rebuilding the deeper dermal matrix, which helps stabilise skin that is vascularly hyper-reactive.
Laser Skin Rejuvenation
We use advanced laser platforms to improve overall facial tone, settle inflammatory flares, and clear the broken capillaries sitting close to the surface.
Medical-Grade Skincare & Barrier Repair
Obagi Rebalance Skin Barrier Recovery Cream
Available through our Vitality Apothecary, this is formulated to calm irritated skin, rebuild a compromised lipid barrier, and reduce the stinging and burning that comes with rosacea.
Broad-Spectrum Sun Protection
Since UV sets off flares for nearly everyone, we stock high-protection mineral sunscreens from Obagi and SkinCeuticals, to shield a sensitive barrier.
Comprehensive Physiological Support
Biomarker & Inflammatory Assessments
Rosacea is a systemic inflammatory condition, so we offer laboratory panels to assess your overall inflammatory burden. That lets our team line up your topical treatment with what is happening internally.
Physician-Calibrated IV Therapy
Wellness infusions are available to support hydration, lower oxidative stress, and aid cellular recovery through an active, painful flare.
Personalized rosacea-calming protocol
Book a consultation and our medical team will build a plan combining in-clinic treatment with medical-grade homecare, to calm your skin and reduce flares.
